At least 10 killed in shooting at adult school in Sweden

The crime scene suffered extensive damage, complicating efforts to identify victims and determine the exact toll, Orebro police said

OREBRO, Sweden 鈥 Around 10 people, including the suspected gunman, were killed at an adult education center in what Sweden鈥檚 prime minister called the country鈥檚 鈥渨orst mass shooting,鈥 .

The Associated Press reports that the shooting took place on the outskirts of 脰rebro, a city located about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Stockholm. The crime scene was severely damaged, making it difficult for investigators to confirm the total number of victims, said Roberto Eid Forest, head of 脰rebro police.

鈥淭oday, we have witnessed brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people,鈥 Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told reporters. 鈥淭his is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history. Many questions remain unanswered, and I cannot provide those answers either.鈥

Police said the death toll could rise as the investigation continues. Eid Forest told reporters that the suspected gunman was among those killed and that authorities believe he acted alone, the Associated Press reported.

While authorities have not established a motive, they said there were no indications that the attack was linked to terrorism.

The school, Campus Risbergska, offers educational programs for students over the age of 20, including primary and upper secondary courses, vocational training and Swedish language classes for immigrants, according to its website. Programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities are also available.

Gun violence in schools is rare in Sweden, but there have been incidents in recent years involving other weapons such as knives or axes, the Associated Press reports.

Following the shooting, police raided the suspect鈥檚 home, but details on what they found were not immediately available. Eid Forest said there were no known warning signs before the attack. Authorities are working to identify the deceased.
