MUNICH 鈥 A driver rammed a car into a labor union demonstration in central Munich on Feb. 13, injuring at least 28 people, including children, authorities reported. Officials believe the incident was a deliberate attack.
The suspect, an Afghan asylum-seeker, was taken into custody, the reported.
According to police, demonstrators from the service workers鈥 union ver.di were marching along a street when the car sped past a police vehicle following the protest, then accelerated and crashed into the group from behind.
Officers apprehended the suspect after firing a shot at the vehicle, Deputy Police Chief Christian Huber said. He confirmed that at least 28 people sustained injuries, some seriously.
Bavaria鈥檚 state interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, stated that the suspect was known to authorities for theft and drug-related offenses but did not provide further details. He added that officials believe the protest was likely chosen at random as the target.
