AUSTIN, Texas 鈥 Austin-Travis County EMS reunited medics with a patient who survived a life-threatening hemorrhage due to an on-site blood transfusion.

Morgan Walker collapsed from severe blood loss after surgery complications. After losing consciousness trying to get to the hospital, she called 9-1-1. ATCEMS specialists Hector Garcia and Lee Nudelman arrived minutes later to find her in critical condition.

鈥淎s soon as we walked inside, I knew she was in bad shape,鈥 Garcia said. 鈥淚 asked her a few basic questions, then I asked, 鈥業s all this blood from you?鈥 There was so much of it, I couldn鈥檛 believe it all came from one person.鈥

As Garcia treated Walker, Nudelman requested a blood resource. District Commander Neda LaFuente arrived as they loaded Walker into the ambulance, and Garcia administered the blood transfusion she prepared.

鈥淭here are not many EMS agencies in the United States that can give blood transfusions,鈥 said Walker. 鈥淭he residents of Austin are really lucky to have such an advanced EMS system available to them, I absolutely credit them with saving my life. Thank you for saving my life.鈥
