18 injured by smoke condition on NYC subway

A train hit debris on the tracks, causing a smoke condition at a Manhattan subway station

NEW YORK — Subway service on the line was restored late Tuesday afternoon after a southbound train hit some debris on the track and caused in Manhattan, the Daily News has learned.

Fire officials said 18 people were injured, with 16 transported to area hospitals. The injured included two members of the train crew. Most of the injuries were believed to be related to smoke inhalation.

The incident caused a suspension of service for about four hours between Dyckman St. and 145th St.

According to the MTA, a southbound 1 train hit debris on the track as it entered the191st St. station, knocking it into the third rail, which is electrified. That caused an electrical arc and created the smoke condition.
