BIRMINGHAM, Ala. 鈥 One person is dead after a vehicle went off the fourth floor of a parking deck at Grandview Medical Center.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and Rocky Ridge Fire were dispatched just before 8:30 a.m. to the hospital.
The location where the incident happened is the staff entrance parking lot, but BFRS Battalion Chief Clay Hendon said he did not know if the fatality victim worked at the hospital.
When crews arrived, they found the silver, four-door sedan on its roof.
Firefighters immediately began to try to extricate the woman, but once they were able to get to her and realized she was dead, they stopped to await the arrival of the Jefferson County Coroner鈥檚 Office.
Authorities said the victim appears to be middle-aged.
Hendon said the vehicle drove off the fourth level of the deck, which is in the rear of the hospital, opposite of the U.S. 280 side.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 know what caused it,鈥欌 Hendon said. 鈥淭here was one witness and police are talking with her.鈥
Hendon said this is the first time something like this has happened at Grandview but said it鈥檚 not unusual.
鈥淢ore times than not, usually the guide cables will catch them,鈥欌 Hendon said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know the speed she was traveling, but this time they didn鈥檛 stop her, and she was able to come off the deck.鈥
As of 9:30 a.m., authorities were waiting for the coroner to arrive so the victim could be removed from her vehicle.
