Pa. fire captain resigns after social media post about Trump rally shooting goes viral

The now-former Americus Hose Company fire captain made a post on X related to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump

SUNBURY, Pa. 鈥 A fire captain with the Americus Hose Company has resigned after his social media post related to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump went viral.

The fire department鈥檚 general manager, Bob Hare, said that firefighter Tony Bendele resigned from his position on July 15, . Bendele served as a fire captain.

In the now-removed post on X, Bendele said 鈥淭oo bad it didn鈥檛 hit him square,鈥 . The post was reported and flagged by X for bullying and harassment.


Following the Trump assassination attempt, first responders are fired or suspended for their social media comments

The post led to a bomb threat at the department, The Daily Item reported.

The city of Sunbury released a statement regarding the post:

鈥淭he city of Sunbury is aware of the situation involving a firefighter at a local fire company. Unfortunately, the fire department is an entity separate from the city itself. However, an investigation into the situation is ongoing at this time.鈥

The shooting happened Saturday during a rally held by the former president. Corey Comperatore, a former Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company chief, was killed and two others were wounded.
