HAZEL PARK, Mich. 鈥 A Hazel Park man charged with carjacking and resisting police was ordered to stand trial Tuesday after police say he pushed the driver out of an EMS ambulance they called to take him to the hospital and got behind the wheel.

Suspect Kahlil Lock, 28, was arrested on the charges over a year ago. Early in the case he was ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination at the state Center for Forensic Psychiatry in York Township and found incompetent for trial.

After treatment, however, he was deemed competent to stand trial on the charges. Lock remains in the Oakland County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond.

Hazel Park 43rd District Judge Brian Hartwell ordered the suspect to trial in Oakland County Circuit Court following Tuesday鈥檚 hearing.

Hazel Park Police Chief Brian Buchholz said a series of events led to Lock鈥檚 arrest on Jan. 18, 2023.

Police were called to the 23000 block Cayuga Avenue after a passerby allegedly saw him with a stick-like piece of wood with protruding screws in it beating on the roof of a vehicle.

鈥淥fficers saw the suspect in the front yard and it turned out the vehicle belonged to his mother,鈥 Buchholz said. 鈥淗e told officers he suffers from psychosis and hadn鈥檛 been taking his medicine.鈥

After talking to the suspect, police said they called a city fire department ambulance to take Lock to a hospital for treatment.

鈥淗e voluntarily got in the ambulance,鈥 Buchholz said. 鈥淥fficers were going to follow the ambulance to the hospital. But as they were walking to their vehicle there was a struggle inside the ambulance and (Lock) was in the driver鈥檚 seat.鈥

Lock had pushed a paramedic out of the ambulance鈥檚 driver鈥檚 seat while the engine was running, police said, and the paramedic suffered some cuts and scrapes on his hand.

Police said they got to the ambulance before Lock could drive off.

Lock resisted and assaulted officers as they struggled with him to get him out of the driver鈥檚 seat.

鈥淎fter they got (Lock) handcuffed he was transported to the hospital,鈥 Buchholz said.

Lock lived at the house with his mother where he was spotted vandalizing her car, police said

Hazel Park police investigated the incident further before they submitted their report to Oakland County prosecutors for criminal charges.

A couple of days before he was arraigned in Hazel Park District Court, police said Lock was inside his mother鈥檚 house when he struck his sister in the eye with a metal frying pan.

Police arrested him for assault with a dangerous weapon.

Lock was arraigned on the felony assault, carjacking, and assaulting and resisting police charges on March 21, 2023. The assault charge involving his sister was later dismissed.

Police said he earlier had been involved in assault incidents while he was living in Georgia. The carjacking charge against Lock is punishable by up to life in prison. The charge of assaulting and resisting police is a two-year felony.

An arraignment time and date for Lock鈥檚 trial in Oakland County Circuit Court was unavailable Tuesday.
